Stop talking, start acting, for the PS3's sake..

Most game comparisons of titles appearing for both the PS3 and the Xbox360 end with the box beeing da winna.
And every once in a while some developer stands up and states that their game (plese insert Your favourite hardware pushing exclusive) "only uses a fraction of the power of the PS3".
I am not the smartest person in the world, but even I start to wonder, if Guerilla state that Killzone 2 only used a fraction of the PS3s power, then why is this so ? Why didnt they give paying customers 100% of the console's power ?
Wouldn't we exspect that 4 years after the PS3's release, devs should be able to use all its power and thus fulfill the "next gen promise" of 30fps at 1920x1080 (which almost no game except for a handful ever achieved).
Slowly I start to think that maybe its all just masquerade and the PS3 has already been used to its fullest but no licensed developer is allowed to say so...

  1. I think the problem is related to the fact that the PS3 didn't sell that well in the past and still doesn't. A game developer or publisher that wants a high number of potential customers would be a fool producing a PS3 only game. Therefore in most cases it's wise to publish the game for several platforms and using the same technical base. Of course by doing so, they have to design a software architecture that is likely to run well on all supported platforms. In reverse it means that the full power of PS3 cannot be utilized.

  2. Hi, thanks fot the comment, but I think the interesting point is that Killzone is a PS3 exclusive and Guerilla is a Sony-exclusive developer, so actually they had three years to develop a game that uses the PS3's full potential without worrying so much about other platforms.Or is the PS3 THAT complicated that it takes more than 3 years to develop an architecture that uses its full power ? If so: what was Sony thinking ?

  3. I see. I wasn't aware of that. In this case I can understand your complain. However the good thing is that Sony does not have to update the hardware in the next few years since the game developers can improve their products continuously for PS3 while for other platforms with a more "traditional" architecture the possibilities are already exhaust. I guess that new innovative technologies just need some time to get well understood by those who have to use it.

  4. My fear is only that maybe the PS3 will reach the end of its lifespan without more than a handful of exclusives that barely touch its potential.I understand that this console lifecycle is extended beyond the traditional 5 years, but it could also happen that the next Xbox comes sooner, so the tech specs of the PS3 would be where the Wii is today :/
The problem is that such high profile games take awfully long to develop, so 2 or three years isnt even unnormal for games like Killzone 3.So I hope that there IS still potential left that carries the PS3 on for the next two years...
